Every poker player needs a basic strategy. Without figuring out when you'll call, raise, fold, or re-raise ahead of time you'd probably have better luck at the lottery. You'll probably get lucky once or twice without knowing good poker strategy, but with knowledge and planning you can take your card playing to new heights.
Most people believe the objective of poker is simply to win the pot. The true objective of poker, however, is to win the most money, not the most pots.
Successfully winning at poker would be incredibly easy if all it took was the number of pots you won. Players would simply continue to raise until their opponents dropped out, or they ran out of chips. Playing this way, you'd win plenty of pots. But your bankroll would rapidly dwindle.
In poker, the best player is the one who wins the most money. In order to do that, enthusiasm must be reigned in with a bit of realism when selecting which hands to play.
You don't have to play every hand you're dealt; even the pros play relatively few. When the pros do play a hand, though, watch out. They will play aggressively, maximizing the amount of money they can win whenever the odds are in their favor.
